10 DIY Myths

You Probably Believe – Part 2

Let’s continue our list of the top 10 DIY myths that you probably believe – so that you can know the truth about DIY renovations, and whether or not they’re worth the trouble.

6. Demolition And Cleanup Is Easy

Demolition must be done carefully, to ensure you avoid damaging pipes, electrical wiring, and structural supports. Not only that, but some materials may be hazardous and require specialized disposal – otherwise you risk a hefty fine.

7. Your Home Improvements Will Always Add Value

If your project is done well, renovating a room can add value to your home. But if it’s poorly or sloppily executed, a renovation could actually lower the value of your home, particularly in a kitchen or bathroom.

8. You Don’t Need To Worry About Local Building Codes Or Permits

Even the most basic renovations may require permits from the local government. You should always check with municipal authorities before you begin your project – or risk fines.

9. You Can Design Your Project On Your Own

To an extent, this is true. Basic things like repainting a room don’t require the help of a professional. But unless you’re an architect or interior designer, chances are you don’t have the expertise to handle a complex, full-scale renovation of your home, or renovating a room like your bathroom or kitchen.

10. Buying A “Fixer-Upper” Is A Great Way To Save Money For DIY Experts

Fixing a home with serious issues isn’t as easy as it looks on TV. Even some of the DIY experts may lose money when repairing a fixer-upper home. Unless you’re an experienced handyman and DIY expert, we recommend avoiding fixer-uppers. They’re often more trouble than they’re worth.
